I’ll leave the complete analysis of this to the real Russia political bloggers, and all I’ll say is this: What’s Putin going to do next? Start banging his shoes on the table?
I’m just going to hope that this gesture is simply his farewell salvo, as it were.

Invade Georgia?

Technically, Russia already occupies Georgia, or at least two provinces of Georgia.
I know we already discussed this the other day, but France marches it’s weaponry on Bastille Day (July 14th) every year. Nobody makes a peep about their saber rattling. Is that only because we imagine France as a bunch of surrender-monkeys and vaguely still perceive Russia as a threat, or something other than an ally?
It will be more interesting to see what policy changes actually take place in the coming year or two, now that Russia is feeling more like a player in world politics.

Well, yes, other countries march their weaponry. But it’s the fact that this is being done in Russia for the first time since the collapse of the Soviet Union that bothers me. It parallels other disturbing trends that seem to mark a return to totalitarianism.
