One of the nice things about St. Petersburg life is that it’s a little more relaxed than life in, say, Washington. A DC friend of mine says in her Friendster profile that she’s looking to meet people who can drop by for Scrabble and don’t have to plan it two weeks in advance. That’s a pretty good indicator of how unnecessarily complicated life can be there. If you haven’t planned your weekend by Monday night, chances are your friends will be too busy for you. I was often guilty of this, always overbooked, not often able to do anything spontaneously.

But here, I sent an e-mail out on Thursday afternoon inviting some friends to come over Friday night and go to the biweekly party at the American Consulate just down the street, and six people turned up. We had a great time. I had a hell of a hangover today though.

About This Blog

I'm an American who started blogging when I moved to Russia in 2004. Eventually I moved to Sweden, where life is pleasant but uneventful, and stopped blogging for lack of interesting things to say. And then I joined Facebook, which further destroyed any motivation for blogging. Maybe someday I'll start blogging again, but for now, this blog is dormant, an archive of The Russia Years: 2004-2008.
